Spanish Club boosts hurricane relief

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP – Last year, a Freehold Township High School Spanish Club was an idea conceived by then-sophomores Angelise Vera and Liz Acque.

By March 2017, in less than one year, their determination, commitment and energy, combined with support from Spanish teacher Yanci Merkel and school administrators, made the club a reality, according to a press release from the Freehold Regional High School District.

There are 55 active members, and 73 members in total, working to spread knowledge and awareness of Spanish culture throughout the school and beyond. That includes the mission of making a positive difference in other people’s lives, according to the press release.

On Nov. 20, officers of the Spanish Club presented a $400 check to Catholic Charities of Trenton representative Arnold Valentin, to be used for hurricane relief in Puerto Rico. The proceeds were the result of a seven-day lollipop sale.

The students also held a non-perishable food donation week and filled two boxes with food that will be distributed to those in need in Puerto Rico, according to the press release.

The students in the Spanish Club are planning to continue their fundraising efforts and to make a connection with a school in Puerto Rico to help provide students with supplies destroyed by Hurricane Maria.
