METUCHEN — Two former mayors and a local attorney will be considered for the mayoral position, which was vacated by Mayor Peter Cammarano on Dec. 4.
On Dec. 11, the Metuchen Democratic Organization held a meeting to select three names required for submission at the Old Franklin Schoolhouse.
The names that will be submitted to the Borough Council for consideration include Jonathan Busch, who serves as chairman of the local Democrats and is founder of The Busch Law Group LLC in Metuchen, former Mayor Edmund O’Brien, who served three terms as mayor and former Mayor John Wiley, who served the borough in the 1990s.
During the nomination process, both former mayors expressed confidence in Busch’s ability to serve as mayor should he be selected by council.
As required by state law, Cammarano’s resignation means that Council President Ronald Grayzel will temporarily become interim mayor/council president and the local political party of the incumbent official must forward the names of possible mayoral candidates to the borough council for its consideration.
Cammarano, who was serving his first term as mayor, submitted his letter for resignation on Dec. 4.
He had said his nomination for Governor-elect Phil Murphy’s chief of staff requires a tremendous amount of his time and energy and felt that he could not continue to give the job as mayor the time required.
It is expected that the borough council will appoint a new mayor at the next council meeting on Dec. 18.
The appointed person will serve out Cammarano’s term, which expires on Dec. 31, 2019.
