Mater Dei High School's George Pearson (12) throws the ball downfield just before he would take a big hit in the NJSIAA Playoffs, Round, Non-Public, Group 2. Mater Dei was defeated by St. Joeseph's of Hammonton 30-14 on Dec 3.

George Pearson, who guided Mater Dei Prep to a state sectional football playoff final the past two seasons, signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his career at Central Michigan University.

The senior quarterback signed his commitment letter at his school in Middletown on Dec. 20.

Mater Dei defeated Holy Spirit High School in the Non-Public, Group 2 state playoff championship game in 2016 when Pearson was a junior. He steered Mater Dei to the Non-Public, Group 2 title game this month when the Seraphs fell to Saint Joseph High School of Hammonton.

“George Pearson is a terrific student-athlete. He excels in the classroom and on the playing field,” Mater Dei head football coach Dino Mangiero said. “I have been coaching high school football for over 25 years now, and he is the best natural quarterback that I have ever coached. He is very smart and processes information quickly. He has all the tools to be a terrific [NCAA] Division I quarterback. I have known [Central Michigan coach] John Bonamego for many years, and I’m very happy that [Pearson] is going to play for a first-class coach and a first-class program.”

“Today is a great day for our family. I am looking forward to playing at the next level and being pushed by my teammates and coaches at Central Michigan,” Pearson said during the signing. “This will be a great opportunity to play early in my career and compete against some of the best players throughout the country.”
