Allentown wrestling team earns sweep on mats at home

The Allentown High School wrestling team swept West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North, 63-12; Steinert High School, 57-15; and Hamilton High School West, 49-27, during a quad-meet that was held on Jan. 6 in Allentown.

The Redbirds had 18 total pins in the three meets, including eight falls against Steinert and five  pins each against West Windsor-Plainsboro North and Hamilton West.

The victory improved Allentown’s record to 11-4 on the year. The Redbirds have a tri-meet on Jan. 13 at Colts Neck High School against the host team and Point Pleasant Borough High School.

Girls’ Basketball

Allentown’s girls’ basketball team defeated Hightstown High School, 55-32, on Jan. 3 in Hightstown.

Junior Lauren Coiante of Allentown led all scores with 17 points. Senior Ryan Weise was a point short of a double-double, scoring nine points and dishing out 10 assists in the game. Weise also had four rebounds and seven steals.

The victory improved the Redbirds’ record to 5-1 on the season.

A game against Robbinsville High School on Jan. 5 was called off due to the snow.

The Redbirds were scheduled to visit Hamilton West on Jan. 9 and they will be the host to Princeton High School on Jan. 16 at 5:15 p.m.

Boys’ Basketball

Allentown’s boys’ basketball team lost a tough road game in Newark against Barringer High School, 75-43, on Jan. 6.

Senior Yeshua Powe led the Redbirds with 11 points in the game. Sophomore RJ Weise scored nine points in the loss.

The Redbirds previously fell to Hightstown, 42-33, on Jan. 3 in Allentown.

Allentown’s record is 2-5 on the season.

The team looked to bounce back with a matchup scheduled for Jan. 9 against Hamilton West. The Redbirds also play home to West Windsor-Plainsboro North on Jan. 12 at 5:30 p.m.
