Student pens winning essay

MILLSTONE – An eighth grade student in the Millstone Township K-8 School District has been recognized for winning a writing competition.

Lana Maizel, a student at the Millstone Township Middle School, recently appeared before the Board of Education to read the essay she wrote near the end of 2017.

Students in Monmouth and Ocean counties were asked to write about the one thing that is guaranteed to make them laugh. In her essay, Lana described how what makes her laugh the most is herself.

“When you think about it, what better person is there to count on to make yourself laugh than yourself?” she read from her essay. “No one knows you better than you.

“I know myself well enough to know that I am a very stressful person by nature. Regardless of how stressed or caught up I am in my worries, there is always one thing that can pull me out of my spiral, simply hearing myself say ‘Seriously?’ ”

Lana received a certificate of achievement from the board.

Superintendent of Schools Christopher Huss said Lana won a writing competition as a seventh-grader, also in 2017. He said she is a current student of language arts teacher Kelsey Plunkett.
