Jackson teen charged with assault on officer

JACKSON – A male teenager was charged with obstruction of the administration of the law and aggravated assault on a police officer following his involvement in an incident in Jackson on Jan. 21.

Police said that at 11:27 p.m., officers Mitch Kafton and Kyle Stybe responded to a home on Adelphi Drive to investigate a report of a 19-year-old intoxicated male who was described as being out of control.

Upon the officers’ arrival, the male retreated to a bedroom and barricaded furniture in front of the door.

While waiting for additional officers to arrive, Kafton went outside to watch the windows and observed the teenager attempting to climb out a window. Stybe also came outside, but the male was able to re-enter the house and the officers observed him leaving the bedroom, according to police.

Stybe entered the house and attempted to take the teenager into custody. Police said a struggle ensued and the officer and the teenager fell into a wall and then onto the floor. The male was eventually handcuffed.

Police said Stybe was bleeding from a laceration on the head that he sustained during the struggle. He was transported to a hospital for treatment.

The teenager was transported to police headquarters and charged with obstruction of the administration of the law, aggravated assault on a police officer and criminal mischief. He was subsequently transported to a hospital for treatment, according to police.
