KEYPORT – The cause of why a portion of the ceiling at Keyport High School fell during the school’s winter break has yet to be determined.
Superintendent Lisa Savoia said that the borough’s police and fire departments did respond to the school on Dec. 31 when the ceiling fell..
“The 1952 section of the first floor ceiling was impacted. There has been no official determination to date. Thankfully, the district was closed and no one was injured,” Savoia said.
“Preliminary investigations by our construction official seem to be pointing to the addition of several pipes and conduits in the hallway that the original ceiling was not designed to support,” Mayor Harry Aumack II said during the Jan. 16 council meeting.
Aumack said the school board has an engineer looking into the cause.
“Student and staff safety is our first priority. On behalf of the Board of Education, we are thankful of the fact that the building was closed when the ceiling was impacted. The support of borough officials is also appreciated, as without certain certifications in a record time, we were able to resume instruction very quickly,” Savoia said.
