Freehold Borough school board updates language arts, math curriculum

FREEHOLD – Two curriculum projects for pupils in the Freehold Borough K-8 School District have been approved by the Board of Education.

On Jan. 22, board members approved an English language arts curriculum project and a math curriculum project. The English language arts curriculum project will have different objectives for pupils in kindergarten through fifth grade and for students in grades six through eight, and there will be one math curriculum project for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

For pupils in kindergarten through fifth grade, the English language arts curriculum project will incorporate fundamental units from educational company Schoolwide: launching writers workshop, narrative unit, informational unit, opinion unit and grammar unit for writing. The project will also incorporate the poetry unit for reading, according to district administrators.

For students in grades six through eight, the English language arts curriculum project will review and edit the district’s curriculum to reflect current New Jersey Student Learning Standards in English language arts, with a review and edits if needed to its pacing guide, materials and resources, and interdisciplinary connections, according to district administrators.

The cost of the English language arts curriculum project for kindergarten through fifth grade is not to exceed $6,300 and the cost of the project for sixth through eighth grade is not to exceed $1,050, according to district administrators, for a total cost not to exceed $7,350.

The math curriculum project will review and edit the district’s curriculum to reflect current New Jersey Student Learning Standards in mathematics, with a review and edits if needed to its pacing guide, materials and resources, and interdisciplinary connections, according to district administrators. The cost of the project is not to exceed $3,500.

In other business, the board accepted a total of $12,576 in grants from the Freehold Borough Education Foundation, a private organization that funds various programs in the school district.

The grants are comprised of $2,487 for Joe’s Holiday Reading Rocks Magic Show for second grade pupils at the Park Avenue Elementary School and the Freehold Learning Center elementary school; $2,277 for Theatrical Story for first grade pupils at the Freehold Learning Center; $1,480 for the Read About it, Talk About it Book Club for eighth grade students at the Freehold Intermediate School.

Also, $1,426 for STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) for second grade pupils at the Freehold Learning Center; $1,278 for Google Chromebook laptop computers at the Park Avenue Elementary School; $1,131 for a Buddy Bench at the Park Avenue Elementary School and the Freehold Learning Center; $722 for Lane’s Chaotic to Calm Classroom Wish List at the Freehold Intermediate School.

And, $695 for the New Jersey Teen Arts Festival at the Freehold Intermediate School; $490 for a carpet to gather and read on and an easel for charts at the Freehold Intermediate School; $449 for Science Exploration and Engagement at the Freehold Intermediate School; and $138 for a magazine subscription at the Park Avenue Elementary School.
