The South Brunswick High School girls’ basketball team had some fun and, along the way, picked up a victory on a special night.

South Brunswick celebrated Senior Night on Feb. 6, when the Vikings hosted Perth Amboy High School

“It feels pretty good,” senior center Alexis Adams said after South Brunswick coasted to a 41-23 victory. “I feel like we came in here expecting to win. It was good to come out and actually do it. It was fun, and everyone was enjoying the atmosphere.”

Adams and the other seniors received flowers and took pictures with their families before the game.

During the game, Adams led the Vikings with 13 points, five rebounds and four blocks. Junior guard Sydney Coleman pitched in with 10 points, and sophomore guard Onoseta Ufuah scored seven points, posted 11 rebounds and had eight steals to contribute to the victory.

“I think we just played carefree,” Adams said. “We weren’t as burdened and stressed today, and when that happens, we just naturally play well, and that really came out today.”

Adams noted that South Brunswick received a boost to its morale, which comes at a good time with postseason tournaments approaching.

“We need to get ready for tournament time,” she said. “The [Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament] is coming up and after that is states, so we just need to be ready.”

The Vikings dominated the game against Perth Amboy from start to finish, bursting out to a 12-2 lead in the first quarter and a 20-6 advantage at the half.

The visiting Panthers tried to make a push in the third quarter, but the Vikings pulled away for the 18-point triumph.

The Vikings’ players were happy with their effort, stating that the ball movement was working really well.

“We were just focused on sharing the ball and attacking the basket,” Ufuah said. “We just did whatever it took to get the win.”

Ufuah pointed out that the victory provides a boost to the team’s confidence.

“It keeps us motivated for the games coming up,” she said.

The Vikings were unable to capitalize in their final regular-season contest, falling to The Pennington School, 50-31, on Feb. 9 in South Brunswick. They are 11-9 on the season.
