Volleyball coach charged with inappropriately touching minor at his Edison home

An area volleyball coach was charged with allegedly touching a 14-year-old Woodbridge girl inappropriately on two occasions at his Edison home and supplying her with alcohol.

Peter Nguyen, 50, was charged with two second-degree counts of endangering the welfare of a child; one count of sexual contact with the 14-year-old; and one count for giving alcohol to the minor, according to a statement released by Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Woodbridge Police Director Robert Hubner on Feb. 13. He is also charged with one third degree count of aggravated criminal sexual contact.

An investigation by the Woodbridge Police Department, Edison Police Department and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office began after the victim’s parents went to the Woodbridge Police Department and notified authorities about Nguyen, according to officials.

During the time of the alleged incidents, the female was a member of the Impact Volleyball Club in Rahway, where Nguyen had been employed as a volleyball coach at the club for approximately three years, officials said.

Nguyen has also worked as a bookkeeper in the business department at the Millburn Board of Education in Essex County for approximately five years and has also been the head volleyball coach for the Millburn High School for approximately three years, officials said.

Millburn Schools Superintendent Christine Burton said the Millburn Township Board of Education has been made aware of criminal allegations made against one of its employees.

“The board is unable to comment about that employee’s terms and conditions of employment or the specific allegations made against the employee,” she said. “To the extent that the criminal allegations may impact the district, we will be fully cooperating with law enforcement authorities.”
