People, dogs join together to fight cancer

On Sunday, April 29, volunteers from the American Cancer Society will be joining forces with residents of New Jersey and their dogs to take steps toward a common goal: the elimination of suffering caused by cancer.

Bark For Life of Central NJ is a brand-new event that will take place at Mannino Park, 1 Mannino Park Dr., Old Bridge, from noon until 4 p.m.

Bark For Life is The American Cancer Society’s dog-friendly “canine companion event” which precedes our annual Relay For Life events throughout the region. The objective is to raise funds and community awareness in the fight against cancer, while simultaneously enjoying a fun day in the park with dogs and people who wish to put an end to cancer in our lifetime. We joyously honor and celebrate all cancer survivors and recognize our canine caregivers and support-dogs at the event. We also pay tribute to those who lost their battle to this terrible disease. Together, we embrace and support those who’ve lost loved ones to cancer.

The event begins with a non-competitive group walk for dogs with their owners, followed by pet-friendly entertainment, contests, games, music, vendors and more. The event will feature a dog-agility course demonstration starring show dogs from Princeton Dog Training Club, and a Doggie Costume Contest.

Donations raised at Bark For Life of Central NJ support cancer research, patient services, disease prevention programs, clinical trials and advocacy.

While there are many Relay For Life events throughout the country, there is only one Bark For Life taking place in this region. Everyone, no matter where they’re from, is welcome to participate. Walkers are encouraged to bring family, friends, anyone interested in spending a fun afternoon to help fight cancer here in New Jersey. Even those who do not have a dog are welcome to walk along with the group for this unique gathering and festival.

The donation/registration fee is $10 per human participant plus $10 per dog.

In this age of uncertainty, the American Cancer Society’s fundraising and community awareness efforts are more important than ever. We welcome new volunteers for everything from event planning to day-of-event set-up. A little of your time can make a huge difference in the fight against cancer.
