Avenel Middle School pupil charged with creating false public alarm

WOODBRIDGE — A 14-year-old student at Avenel Middle School has been charged with creating a false public alarm at the building.

On March 2, the Woodbridge Police Department received a call from a parent who expressed concern about a social media post from a student who is enrolled in a Woodbridge public school, according to Woodbridge Police Director Robert Hubner.

Police and the Woodbridge Board of Education directed staff members and students at the Avenel Middle School to shelter in place while police conducted an investigation. Within a short time, authorities determined there was no threat and staff members were directed to resume normal activities.

The student was charged after an investigation by the Woodbridge Police Department and consultation with the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Hubner said that during the investigation, police were in contact with school board officials, which he said resulted in a quick resolution of the incident.
