SOUTH RIVER– South River High School students served as the hosts to a town hall assembly during the National School Walkout in order to discuss safety and security in schools.

On March 14, students from across the country participated in peaceful protests to bring national attention to gun violence and advocation for stricter gun laws after three staff members and 14 students were killed by an active shooter on Feb. 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

In response to buzz on social media encouraging students to participate in a walkout on March 14, South River High School Principal Wayne Sherman and Superintendent of Schools Sylvia Zircher met with student leaders at the high school. Students expressed an interest in holding a town hall assembly with members of the Board of Education, South River Police Department and borough officials, according to information provided by Zircher.

The agenda for the day was developed by the student leaders and included prepared statements, as well as a question-and-answer session on the topic of safety and security at South River schools, according to the statement.

Throughout the assembly, students’ feedback and suggestions were collected for further consideration and discussion, according the statement.

It was reiterated that the school district has an ongoing partnership with the South River Police Department in developing procedures and practices to ensure safety and security, according to the statement.
