88-year-old Cranford man dies in head-on crash in Woodbridge

WOODBRIDGE — An 88-year-old Cranford man died as a result of a head-on collision after his vehicle collided with another vehicle while he was reportedly driving the wrong way on Route 9 near Metuchen Avenue.

The crash happened at 9:39 a.m. on April 8, according to Police Capt. Scott Kuzma.

Thomas McHugh was driving north in the southbound lanes of Route 9 near Metuchen Avenue when it struck another vehicle head on. The crash caused one of the vehicles to catch fire, police said.

Both drivers were injure. McHugh and the other driver were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick via Medevac. McHugh subsequently died of his injuries, police said.

The Woodbridge Police Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating the crash.
