OLD BRIDGE — As children with special needs age out of the school district, they now have a place to go.
The township recently approved for Community Options to open a center in order to create an adult day program.
Barry Solomon, who championed for an adult day program for adults with special needs in the township, said the endeavor makes him happy on both a personal and parental level.
“I believe Community Options will be a great addition to the Old Bridge community,” he said. “This shows the commitment that Old Bridge has for our special needs adults. They will now be able to continue to grow personally and to learn employment skills while maintaining their current friendships in Old Bridge. I am looking forward to my son Scott attending after he is finished with high school.”
Community Options, Inc., a nationally based non-profit organization headquartered in Princeton, has been in business for 29 years. The organization offers adult day training, behavioral therapy and supported employment programs.
The organization serves thousands of individuals with disabilities throughout 11 states.
In Old Bridge, Community Options’ staff will meet with individuals and their families to ensure that each plan incorporates the person’s preferences.
The organization’s housing services are designed to assist people who are living with family members and are on waiting lists for community placement.
The employment services focus on support and follow-up required to assist with pursuing employment, taking into consideration the specific needs of each individual.
“I am encouraging anyone interested in this program to set up a one on one appointment with Community Options,” Mayor Owen Henry said. “These programs are incorporated in our township to give opportunity to people of all ages.”
Henry had said he has been working with Pete Pero, Camp ROBIN coordinator, and they have been trying to push for a special needs adult program for about two years. Camp ROBIN is a year-round program offering both therapeutic and diverse recreational activities for children ages 7-21 through the Old Bridge Township Parks and Recreation Department.
