Colts Neck boys’ state hoops tournament run ended by Trenton

Colts Neck High School’s surge through the state sectional boys’ basketball tournament came to a close in the championship game.

Colts Neck, the top seed and playing on its home court, was edged by seventh-seeded Trenton Central High School, 42-41, in the Central Jersey, Group 4 state sectional tournament title game on March 5.

Colts Neck was led in the defeat by Danny Gaines, who helped spark Colts Neck to three state sectional victories. Gaines connected on 16 points in the loss to Trenton after he had produced 22 points in the sectional semifinals during a 58-40 triumph over Montgomery High School on March 3.

Gaines and Ben Bosland hit for 16 points each in a 57-48 victory over Middletown High School South in the quarterfinals on March 1.

In the state tournament opener, Bosland scored 21 points, Rob Hill recorded 17 and Gaines posted 13 in a 74-66 overtime victory against Monroe Township High School on Feb. 27.

The defeat to Trenton left Colts Neck with a final record of 19-8.
