The baseball bats are booming this spring at Allentown High School.

“We swung the bats well,” Allentown coach Bob Nice said. “That’s been the good thing for us all year. We’ve been swinging the bats well, and lately, we’ve been pitching well too. Defensively, we need to pick things up a little bit. But, we’ve been swinging the bat well and we’ve been pitching. So that’s gotten us through so far.”

Ben Mashkevich, a junior pitcher, is warming up, too.

“My arm felt good today,”Mashkevich said recently. “It hasn’t felt this good in a long time. Felt good to go out there and have a nice outing.”

So while the hitting has been clicking and the pitching is improving, Nice is calling on his defense to make a positive impact.

“Not giving away outs,” Nice said. “We’re doing that way too much. We’re leaving our pitchers out to dry a lot. Ben did a great job today picking us up and getting us through, but we have to be better.”

“Yeah, defensively we have to do better,” Mashkevich said. “Once we get that cleaned up, we’ll be fine.”

The Redbirds have started the season with a 6-1-1 record, which they attained after they had knocked off  the Hun School, 7-6, on April 17.

This start comes one season after Allentown won the Group 3 state tournament championship.

Nice still asks that his team continue to improve.

“We want to get better every game,” Nice said. “That’s really what it is. I mean, we’re in a tough conference, and we have a tough group. So, we have to get better every day so we can continue to compete. We have so far, but we have to continue to do it.”

“I just like to get more opportunities,” Mashkevich said. “It will only help me as a pitcher. So, the more I can come out here and pitch, the better.”

The Redbirds have relied on the power and timely hitting of senior outfielder Austin Ferrier and senior catcher Chris Reeder.

But Nice is pleased that his team as a whole is hitting.

Other Redbirds who are swinging hot bats are Mike Zupko, Matt Tannenbaum and Brandon Gaul.

“Offensively, we have guys up and down the lineup,” Nice said. “We’ve had different guys every day, which is nice. Up and down the lineup, we have a very balanced attack. If one person is struggling, we have another guy steps up and picks them up. That’s why we’ve had the success we’ve had. It’s not just one guy.”

The Redbirds will  continue their hot hitting when they play as the host to Trenton Central High School on April 27. The game is slated to start at 4 p.m.
