East Brunswick Vo-Tech students show off their ‘skills’

EAST BRUNSWICK – Forty students from the East Brunswick campus of the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Schools competed in the 2018 SkillsUSA State Championships.

This year, students competed in 29 different competitions. Sixteen different shops were represented, some shops sending students to SkillsUSA for the first time. Competitions were held during March and April.

The East Brunswick campus came home with 17 medals, more than doubling the previous record of eight, including two students who are now eligible to compete in Louisville, Kentucky, at the SkillsUSA National Championships in June. The chapter was also recognized as Gold Level Chapter of Distinction, one of four in the state.

Gold medal winners were:

  • Calvin Coates: basic construction
  • Lauren Cyrus: prepared speech
  • Nia Drinkard: architectural drafting
  • Destiny Castillo and Patrycja Sliwowski: state banner design

Silver medal winners were:

  • Lexie Enzana: food service
  • Josh Houskeeper: HVAC-R
  • Tom Syx: technical drafting

Bronze medal winners were:

  • Joe Temenski: basic masonry
  • Pat Temenski: restaurant service
  • Lindsey Kuhlthau and AJ Longo: wedding cake decorating
  • Sean Mejorada: technical drafting
  • Noah Perez and Brian Rodriguez: digital cinema production
  • Jonny Vorreas and Josh Houskeeper: state banner design
