Marlboro High School’s boys’ lacrosse players are absorbing as much as they can while they progress through this season.
Case in pint came during a defeat, a 12-2 setback to a good Howell High School team on April 16 in Howell.
“We had one goal early in the game, and it took a long time to get a second one,” Marlboro coach Alex Sinkovich said. “But we were able to capitalize on some transition stuff, and we kept fighting to score that second one. So, I loved our fight today.”
Chris Festa, a senior who plays on defense, saw how his teammates have progressed while the Mustangs seek to win their first game after falling in their opening games.
“We stayed on the ball the whole time,” Festa said. “We got out to hands a little bit. Definitely an improvement over the last few games. So, we just have to keep working hard.”
But the Marlboro coaches and players are prepared to keep growing and working on improving this spring.
“Everything,” Sinkovich said. “Everything needs to be worked on.”
“Pretty much everything,” Festa said. “On offense, we need longer possessions to give the defense a break. On defense, we need to know who’s coming and going. Know who’s hot and where people are on the field.”
Sinkovich is pleased in how Marlboro’s goalie has performed.
“Our goalie [senior] Mark Armellino has been playing really well,” Sinkovich said. “He stepped in from a kid we had last year. He’s been really good for us so far. If we can get some of our defensive schemes down around him, we will be in a much better shape.”
The Mustangs will have another chance to continue to grow and work on the game when they play as the host to Red Bank Regional High School on April 27. The game is slated to start at 6:30 p.m.
