Edison High School has a youth movement on its boys’ lacrosse team.

“We’re a young team,” Edison coach Ron Wahler said. “We only have five seniors. We’re trying to hang in with all of our opponents as best we can. We’re learning. We’re just trying to learn and progress into next year.”

Being young can result in growing pains as Edison has learned this spring.

But Wahler believes that if the team can master a few fundamentals, than Edison’s fortunes will turn.

“An important part of lacrosse is transition,” Wahler said. “Going from offense to defense and defense to offense. We’re having trouble getting ground balls. Normally, the team that picks up the most ground balls wins the game, so we need to get better at that. Face-offs also. We’re going to get better at those as well.”

Wahler loves the effort and leadership that some of his young players are showcasing this year,.

He pointed out the play of midfielder Henry Maurath, attackman Mike Yasko, goalie John Nolasco and defender Liam Dougherty.

“Our junior, Maurath,” Wahler said. “He’s been playing really well for us. Our captain, Yasko has been a real leader for us as well. Our goalie, Nolasco, is really good as well. And our best defenseman is Dougherty. Like I said, we’re young, but those guys have really stepped up for us so far.”

The young Eagles will have another chance to grow on April 26 when they travel to North Brunswick High School for a 4 p.m. game.
