For young teams, some coaches measure how well their team is progressing based on how the players perform against top competition.

Case in point is Andrew Borriello, the boys’ lacrosse coach at Old Bridge High School.

Old Bridge fell but the coach was pleased after a 5-4 defeat that the Knights suffered against a good Saint Joseph Regional High School team from Metuchen on April 17 in Old Bridge.

“We played Saint Joe’s hard,” Borriello said. “We lost that game in triple overtime. We’re getting better. If you look at the teams we’re playing, and the outcomes of the games, you’ll see that our hard work is paying off. We just have to keep working.”

One of the things that Borriello wants to see more of out of his squad is improvement in  overall chemistry.

“We just want to be better at playing as a team,” Borriello said. “We want to get better at everything that we do. Yeah, so get better at everything, and do it together.”

Borriello believes that Old Bridge can make a run the post-season tournament if the Knights continue to compote and improve.

“I’m hoping that if we keep working hard, we can continue to get better,” Borriello said. “If we do that, I’m hoping that we can make a run, and hopefully go far in our county tournament.”

Borriello pointed out some of the key players.

“I think our defense as a whole is playing well,” Borriello said. “Offensively, we have Bryson Corbett playing well. He’s a sophomore. We have him and [sophomore] Jack Starner who’s playing well offensively right now. On defense, like I said, the whole team is playing well. Our goalie, [junior] Andrew Cherry is playing great. Constantino Sacasa on defense is really good. As a team, we’re getting much better.”

The Knights will continue their road on improvement when they travel on April 26 to play  Monroe High School at 4 p.m.
