A young boys’ lacrosse team is blooming right before the eyes of its coach at Allentown High School.
Allentown coach Carl Schubauer is witnessing the emergence of his young team.
“I’m really seeing the guys, so far, starting to come together,” Schubauer said. “As we hit this part of the season, and we know that the Mercer County Tournament is about two weeks away. So, we’re really starting to come together. Our new junior [Rajiv Mehta] who’s a goalie, he’s playing much better. And even our two freshman attack-men [Clayton Moench and Peter Pinto], they’re all starting to merge together as one. So, it’s been great so far.”
Schubauer hopes that his team, which started off with a 3-5 record, can continue to make strides, especially on the offensive end.
“Obviously, one of the things we need to work on is to start capitalizing some of the shots that we’re getting,” Schubauer said. “That will help put us more in the win column than we’ve been in so far this year. We know that we have three tough games coming up with Princeton [High School], Notre Dame [High School], and Hightstown [High School] to end our season. So, we know we have to be top notch going into that.”
With a rugged schedule ahead, Schubauer wants to see his Redbirds prove that they can play with any opponent.
“Obviously, we always expect to get a win,” Schubauer said. “But really, we just want to be competitive as possible. If anyone starts looking past us, we’re hoping for that chance to upset somebody. The more we come together, the better that chance is.”
Schubauer touched on some of his key players.
“The guys that have been playing well for me so far include Moench,” Schubauer said. “[Junior midfielder] Jared Jordan has been great. Mehta, our goalie has been top notch. And Hunter Loock, our defenseman pole, he’s been really good. Our defense as a whole has played very well, but still working really hard to get to the elite level we want them to be at.”
The young Redbirds will continue their progression when they compete in the Mercer County Tournament that is scheduled to start this week.
