In his inaugural address, President John F. Kennedy said that “if a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.”

Gov. Phil Murphy’s first budget address builds on the meaning of this famous statement by JFK. The governor has proposed a budget that will make New Jersey a state committed to equality and fairness for all its citizens.

As the governor said, the time is now to enact programs that deliver relief for the middle class, including greater funding for education which will inevitably lead to lower property taxes.

As someone who served as inspector general of the New Jersey Department of Transportation and as a member of Gov. Murphy’s Transition Committee on Infrastructure and Transportation, I was particularly pleased to see the governor’s proposed budget includes almost a quarter of a billion dollars in increased funding to help restore NJ Transit to its former position of pre-eminence.
