Freehold volleyball hoping for energy surge to end the season

An energetic effort –no matter the result– is what pleases the boys’ volleyball coach at Freehold High School.

“I think this was our best game overall,” coach Ryan Walkiewicz said after Freehold was defeated by a strong Christian Brothers Academy team on April 30. “The energy these guys brought was awesome. They played aggressively against one of the best teams around. The score isn’t something that I can fault them for. But, the aggressive play and the energy they brought was what I was happy to see today.”

Daniel Cutaneo, a senior, also pointed out the fiery play of Freehold.

“I definitely saw the most intensity out of every single player today,”  Cutaneo said. “We definitely wanted this game. We played the best we’ve ever played.”

Those comments came after Freehold’s 2-0 setback to CBA in Lincroft.

Freehold gave CBA all it could handle in a 25-20 defeat in the first game.

The loss dropped the Colonials record to 3-8 on the year, but consistency could result in more victories, according to Walkiewicz.

“I think our biggest improvement is finding consistency in the team,” Walkiewicz said. “We have games where we come out looking awesome, but then we’re down the next day. I think that’s our biggest thing. When we’re consistent, we’re strong. When we lose it, that’s how we’ve lost our games.”

“We definitely have to find the intensity that we showed in this game in every single game,” Cutaneo said. “When we come out every single game with this energy from the start, then we can compete the entire time and win more games. Usually what we do is we find our intensity halfway through the game and it’s already too late. We would be down by 10 points already. So, finding that intensity from the beginning of the game will be crucial for us.”

Walkiewicz hopes that Freehold will inspired by its performance against CBA.

“I’m expecting us to keep our energy high,” Walkiewicz said. “We want to compete in every game. Looking at the rest of our schedule, every game is winnable. I’m expecting these guys to come out with that type of confidence. They should believe that they can win every game, and play like they can win every game. If we do that, we can round out the year in successful fashion.”

“If we play like this against every other team, I think we can win out this year,” Cutaneo said.

Walkiewicz touched on some of the Colonials who have shined this spring.

“Our other senior captain is Justin Krauss,” Walkiewicz said. “He’s pretty much had to play three different positions this year, and he’s excelled in all of them. The most pleasant surprise has been [sophomore] Thomas Papirnik coming up from JV last year. He’s been playing a strong middle. Giving us consistent defense and a consistent attack. And [senior] Enrique Mendez, our barrow who’s just been all over the place. His hustle. He dives all over the floor, keeping balls in play. He’s the perfect barrow for his energy and his skill set.”

The Colonials will have another chance to prove that they can play a consistent game on May 14 when they travel to Manchester Township High School for a 3:45 p.m. game.
