The tie was broken.

And with it came another Shore Conference Tournament championship for the Holmdel High School boys’ tennis team.

Holmdel edged its rival, Christian Brothers Academy, 3-2, to win the Shore Conference Tournament championship at Shore Regional High School in West Long Branch on May 9.

That result provided Holmdel with its eighth SCT title –and first since 2015–in the last 10 years.

Just four days earlier, Holmdel and CBA shared the Monmouth County Tournament championship. Each team finished the individual/team tournament with 23 points at Tindall Park in Middletown.

Holmdel fell to the eventual SCT champion, Marlboro High School, in last year’s semifinals while CBA defeated Holmdel in the 2016 championship match. Holmdel had won seven straight SCT championships before the loss in the final to CBA two years ago.

Holmdel coach Chuck Chelednick was prepared for a tight match in this spring’s title match.

“We knew it was going to be close coming in,” Chelednick said. “We saw these guys earlier in the week during the county tournament. My guys know their guys. So, we knew it was going to be close. It was a matter of who was going to step up.”

Chelednick pointed out a few of the heroes for Holmdel.

“Today, our second doubles played well. [Senior first singles] Justin [Wain] played well like he always does. He’s been an automatic point all year. And then [junior] Alex [Tsai] came through at the second singles. It was a good win. We lost to them two years ago in a close match here so it was nice to get the revenge.”

“It was a great match,” Wain said. “I knew what I had to do going into the match. I played my opponent just the weekend before so I knew what he was bringing to the table. I think I played my game for the most part. It got a little dicey in the second set, but I was able to pull it out. Alex did a great job in the second singles, and our second doubles put it together. We just know when to tighten up and put a win together when we need to.”

Chelednick reiterated that he had total confidence in his deep roster all year long.

“It obviously all starts with Justin,” Chelednick said. “Like I said before, and not to jinx him, but, he’s been an automatic point all year. He’s undefeated so far this year to this point. We also have great depth. 2-10 is sound, it’s just a matter of who’s going to step up on that particular day. Today, it happened to be second doubles and second singles, but [junior] Brian Chu has won some big games this year, and first doubles has won some this year as well. So, we don’t know who it’s going to come from on a daily basis, but we’ve made it work.”

Wain explained how he became such a dominant player, stating that he never let’s the moment get too big.

“I’ve just been playing really loose,” Wain said. “I just try to not put too much pressure on myself. I know when I do that, I play too tight, so I’ve just been going out there and playing on my terms. Not letting my opponent dictate the game.”

With the Shore Conference championship wrapped up, the Hornets will focus their attention on winning a seventh consecutive Central Jersey, Group 2 state sectional tournament, which started on May 10.

Then Holmdel will focus on claiming its fourth straight Group 2 state championship. The Hornets have won five of the last six Group 2 state titles.

“We start states next week,” Chelednick said. “The section is a little bit harder this year with Hopewell Valley [High School] moving down from Group 3 to Group 2. We’ll probably have to face them in the semi’s if both teams get that far. That would be a good match. Rumson [Fair Haven High School] is also much improved from last year. The past couple of years, we’ve taken care of the sectionals, but this year, we’ll need to play really well and take it one game at a time.”

“I think that everyone on this roster can play with anyone in the state,” Wain said. “We’re all really talented. We have a lot of great depth on this team. I think it’s just a matter of how confident we are going into it. Especially with Hopewell Valley now in the section. That will be a great match. We still got some work to do. We got to prove that we’re the best team in the Group 2 sectional.”
