SAYREVILLE – Students at Sayreville War Memorial High School have been recognized by the Sayreville School District Board of Education for their accomplishments during the school year.
At a recent meeting, the board passed a resolution commending and honoring the top 10 students at the high school: Kathleen Beben, Michael George Philip, Ashley Gordon, Hamidul Islam, Harshil Trivedi, Jonathan-Ian Balin, Supriya Iyer, Dylan Lam, Naomi Aziz and Ankur Vijayvargiya. Each student was presented a copy of the resolution from Board President Kevin Ciak.
Kathleen is this year’s high school valedictorian and Michael is the salutatorian.
“This is a meeting where we recognize all of our exceptional students and we have many exceptional students to recognize, celebrate and honor tonight,” Superintendent of Schools Richard Labbe said. “Not only students who demonstrate great ability in track, basketball or on the wrestling mat, but students who also demonstrate that exceptional ability in the classroom and even outside of the classroom, whether it’s in the community or in the school, doing things outside of their academics.”
“It’s an honor to recognize our top 10 students,” Ciak said. “These are the students who have achieved academic excellence here at our high school and we commend them for not only the work that they’ve done senior year, but this is something they embarked on in kindergarten. Even though the GPA for your top 10 status really is only calculated for your high school years, it’s the foundation that starts in kindergarten that really builds up to being able to achieve this level of success.
“I really want to commend not only the top 10 students, but also all of their friends, their parents, their family members who have supported them throughout this endeavor of theirs because it really does take a village to achieve this level of student achievement in our district and we’re really proud of the work that all of you have done.”
The board also passed a resolution commending high school students Amen Khan and Connor McCabe as the Middlesex County Association of School Administrators/Middlesex County School Board Association Students of the Year.
“This is not necessarily the most high ranking student, although it could be,” said board member Lucy Bloom, who serves on the Middlesex County School Board Association Board of Directors. “The Middlesex County Association of School Administrators and the Middlesex County School Board Association recognize outstanding students every year. And there are generally two from every high school.
“Many of the students who are honored have gone above and beyond. They’re just really great kids who have done something special. And I think we have two of those here tonight,” she said.
After Bloom concluded her comments, Amen and Connor each received copies of the resolution.
