Floyd memorial scheduled for June 23

A public memorial service for  James Floyd Sr., a former mayor of Princeton, is scheduled for 11 a.m. June 23 at Nassau Presbyterian Church, 61 Nassau St., Princeton, according to Floyd’s son, Michael.

Floyd, 96, died May 14.

Remembered for his commitment to civil rights and affordable housing, Floyd made history on the political front by becoming the first black candidate elected to the Princeton Township Committee, in 1968. He later served as mayor, in 1971, the year he was re-elected.

Floyd lived for a time in Ohio, but he returned to Princeton and remained active in the community.
