Sayreville school board approves administrators’ transfers

SAYREVILLE – Two administrators in the Sayreville School District have assumed new positions for the 2018-19 school year.

On June 12, the Board of Education approved the transfer of Donna Jakubik from principal of Sayreville Middle School to the new position of director of special projects, and Richard Gluchowski from vice principal at Sayreville War Memorial High School to succeed Jakubik as principal of Sayreville Middle School.

Board President Kevin Ciak, Vice President Anthony Esposito, and board members Christopher Callahan, Karen Rubio and John Walsh voted “yes” on transferring Jakubik and Gluchowski to their new roles. Board members Daniel Balka, Phyllis Batko and Thomas Biesiada voted “no” on the transfers. Board member Lucy Bloom abstained on Gluchowski’s transfer and voted “yes” on Jakubik’s transfer.

Jakubik will receive a salary of $150,875 as the director of special projects, the revised job description of which was also approved by the board on June 12. Ciak, Esposito, Biesiada, Bloom, Callahan, Rubio and Walsh voted “yes” on approving the job description; Balka and Batko voted “no.”

When the transfer was approved, Gluchowski was to receive a total salary of $134,275 as principal of the middle school, which was comprised of a $133,075 base salary and $1,200 for longevity. His salary was amended by the board on June 26 to change his longevity to $1,600, making his total salary $134,675 as middle school principal, which Ciak, Esposito, Balka, Bloom, Callahan, Rubio and Walsh voted “yes” on and Batko and Biesiada voted “no.”

Prior to board members approving the transfers, Ciak thanked Jakubik and Gluchowski for their previous and future service to the district.

“I want to take a minute to recognize Ms. Jakubik and thank her for her leadership of the middle school for the past 15 years,” Ciak said. “Ms. Jakubik has done a great job at the middle school and I think one of the hallmarks of her leadership [has] been her collaborative style with the staff at the middle school.

“The middle school age is a very difficult age for children and that obviously puts a great deal of pressure on staff. Ms. Jakubik has done a great job in building that culture, building that climate with her staff and really building a team. I want to thank her for her leadership.

“More than thanking her for her leadership, I also want to thank her for taking on this new position because not only is it a new position for her and it gives her a chance to contribute to the district in a very different way at a district-wide level rather than just a school level, but it also provides an opportunity for us to continue to build our ‘bench of additional leaders’ and additional administrators and allows us to give additional people experiences in new areas of leadership throughout the school district.

“I think it’s a very unselfish move by Ms. Jakubik to allow this to happen to enable other individuals to get the same type of ability to lead, the same type of ability to grow as she has grown as a leader at the middle school. I really want to recognize Ms. Jakubik for all of her efforts,” Ciak said.

“I also want to congratulate Mr. Gluchowski,” he continued. “Certainly, you [Gluchowski] have distinguished yourself as a vice principal at the high school. When we talked about [Superintendent of Schools Richard] Labbe’s definition of what a Bomber is, not only are you a graduate of Sayreville War Memorial High School, but you are truly a Bomber in the sense that you have immersed yourself in every facet of the school experience for not only the Sayreville high school students, but the district as a whole.

“I know this will be another great step in your career here, going to the middle school as principal and a great learning opportunity for you. I wish you well and I thank you for taking on this challenge as well,” Ciak said.
