Jackson Liberty High School enjoyed the best girls’ lacrosse season in program history this spring.

The Lions finished 16-5, won the B South Division in the Shore Conference and reached the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Central Jersey, Group 3 sectional semifinals.

Two seniors, Danielle Marotta and Maeve Carney, gave the Lions a strong foundation in the midfield. Both were versatile standouts who scored, passed and defended at elite levels.

As a reward for their efforts, Jackson Liberty coach Sarah Hayek nominated Marotta and Carney for the Shore Girls Lacrosse Coaches Association Senior All-Star Game that was played at Middletown High School South on June 11.

Both played for the North All-Stars in a 20-16 victory over the South All-Stars. Carney recorded three goals and an assist in the victory. Marotta produced a goal and an assist. True to form, the duo assisted each other on different goals.

“They work so well because they’ve been playing together since middle school or even earlier. Once they got to high school it all clicked together,” Hayek said. “They have this chemistry where they don’t even have to communicate. They just know where each other are going to be. They just know. I really haven’t had that before.”

Hayek had different reasons for picking each senior leader, though picking both was a no-brainer.

Marotta missed most of her junior season with an ACL injury. Instead of losing interest, “she worked her butt off in the offseason,” Hayek said.

“She ran indoor track and got herself ready,” Hayek added. “One of her strengths this year was her fitness. I can’t recall a game where I had to take her out. Defensively, she’s very good.”

Carney has been a program cornerstone since arriving at Jackson Liberty in 2014.

“Maeve has worked her butt off since freshman year. She’s extremely coachable and helps her teammates,” Hayek said. “Even when she was a junior, she helped the seniors. She was an all-around player.”

Marotta and Carney graduated in June, but they are not done playing organized lacrosse. Both will play in college, Marotta at Stockton University and Carney at Montclair State University.

Hayek will miss both cornerstones for sure, and their senior teammates. Jackson Liberty had 10 seniors in 2018. Seven started. Together, they led Jackson Liberty to two straight sectional tournament appearances, in 2017 and ‘18.

“Seventy percent of them played lacrosse together since middle school. This was a huge year for us,” Hayek said. “But it’s the same thing with my junior class.”

Howell High School also posted a solid girls’ lacrosse season in 2018, reaching the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 4 sectional tournament quarterfinal round. Howell was defeated in the state sectionals by Freehold Township High School, 20-11. The Rebels ended the season with an 11-8 record.

Like Hayek, Howell coach Chelsea Lynch selected two senior leaders, attacker Sarah Huguenin and midfielder Jenna Cholowinski, to play in the Shore All-Star Game.

Huguenin and Cholowinski joined Marotta and Carney on the victorious North team.

Cholowinski ,scored two goals in the all-star game, finished with more than 100 goals in her Howell career. She will play lacrosse for York College of Pennsylvania.
