Matawan council aims to create sports commission

MATAWAN – The Matawan Borough Council is planning to introduce an ordinance that will, if adopted, establish the municipality’s first sports commission.

The ordinance was on the agenda for introduction on July 17 but was held. The ordinance is now scheduled for introduction at the council meeting on Aug. 8.

Mayor Joseph Altomonte said the commission would help schedule and organize tasks for the three sports organizations that sponsor sports events at Gravelly Brook Park.

At the park, there is a soccer field, a baseball field and a softball field, according to Altomonte.

Matawan “has three different organizations playing three different sports, so just to keep on the scheduling, keeping everybody friendly [and] if there is anything major that an organization feels the borough needs to do, [the sports commission] will act as our eyes and ears,” he said.

Altomonte said seven people would serve on the sports commission. A term would run for one year. He said the borough will have control of the new commission.

If the ordinance is adopted by the council, Altomonte said the commission will hold its first monthly meeting in the fall.
