OLD BRIDGE – The Jonas Salk Middle School girls’ and boys’ soccer teams played in a scrimmage, raising more than $4,000 for the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York in the name of former student Christopher Picco.

Chris was a Salk student who bravely battled cancer and passed away in 2002. This was the 16th consecutive year that the school has held this event, which took place on June 22, according to information provided by the district.

To raise money, the soccer players from both teams asked for pledges from family members and friends to pay for their game jerseys, donating the excess funds to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Many of the school’s faculty and staff members organized and ran a concession stand during the game. Faculty also donated items to be sold at the stand, according to the statement.

The players, their families, the faculty and staff, and the students all worked together to make the fundraising event a huge success.

“For those interested in young adults coming together making a positive impact in their community, the final score was a big win for the cancer center’s research fund,” Nicholas Andreacci, the boys’ soccer coach at Salk, said in the statement.
