Longtime special education teacher in Sayreville announces retirement

SAYREVILLE – After more than a decade of service to the Sayreville School District, a special education teacher will retire from her position at the end of the year.

The retirement of Marda Sergermeister, a grade three inclusion teacher at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Elementary School, was honored by the Board of Education on July 26. Her retirement will become effective on Jan. 1, 2019.

According to Superintendent of Schools Richard Labbe, Sergermeister had a teaching career in New York before coming to Sayreville to work at Eisenhower, where she was on the staff for 16 years.

“Marda has worked as a special education teacher, providing in-class resource center support, as well as replacement support, during her tenure here in Sayreville. The last several years, she has worked very closely with [third grade teachers] Mrs. [Maria] Vella, Mrs. [Debra] Hessner [and] Mr. [Dedrick] Dye as an inclusion teacher. Her colleagues have always found Mrs. Sergermeister willing to share her knowledge, as well as possessing a willingness to learn new curricula, computer programs and best instructional practices.

“She prides herself in being a strong and avid advocate for her students,” Labbe continued. “Marda is able to advocate so strongly for them because she develops a rapport with her students that allows her to help them to meet and exceed their expectations. Her students and her colleagues will miss her incredibly. We wish her absolutely nothing but the absolute very best as she begins this new and very exciting chapter in her life.”
