EAST BRUNSWICK – The Raritan Valley YMCA was recently the recipient of an Eagle Scout project which brought the history of the Y at 144 Tices Lane, East Brunswick.

Steven Alaimo of Boy Scout Troop 223 replaced a section of damaged sidewalk with concrete pavers while adding the Y logo with old brick from the original New Brunswick YMCA building which was torn down earlier this year, according to a statement provided by the Y.

Steven, an incoming senior at East Brunswick High School, raised the money needed for the project on a GoFundMe page. He recruited other scout members to assist and completed the project in three of the hottest days of the summer.

“Volunteers are the lifeblood of any non-profit organization. Steven’s project is sustainable, attractive and has eliminated a safety issue. We are thankful for his contribution,” Gina Stravic, executive director, said in the statement. “We are able to do greater things for the community and expand our reach with the help of volunteers.”

The YMCA invites all area residents to volunteer. Youth or corporate work groups are welcome to help with one-time projects.

The Raritan Valley Y serves East Brunswick, New Brunswick, North Brunswick, Milltown, South River, Spotswood, Helmetta, Jamesburg, Monroe, South Brunswick, Middlesex, Piscatway and Franklin.
