The Metuchen YMCA has announced a new program, “Exercising Speech,” which combines personal training with speech therapy.

The program is designed to help individuals with special needs improve their physical fitness while simultaneously increasing their receptive, expressive and pragmatic language abilities.

In additional to physical health, each personal training session will work on improving an individual’s abilities pertaining to decision making, conveying wants and needs, articulation and speech intelligibility, following directions and social skills.

The trainer for the program is James Farley, a nationally-certified personal trainer and ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist. He has extensive experience working with a variety of populations who struggle with communication deficits. He works with children who have learning and/or language disabilities, multiple disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder self-contained classrooms.

Sessions will be held on a one-on-one basis, and will be offered in one-, five- or 10-hour training packages, broken into 30-, 45- or 60-minute segments. For beginners, a Buy 2 Get 1 Free package is available.

The program is open to members of all ages.

The Metuchen branch of the YMCA is located at 65 High St., Metuchen.
