EDISON — A brush fire off Raritan Center Parkway and Olympic Drive engulfed an old 50-by-100 foot building, abandoned from the days when the sprawling business park was a military arsenal during World War I, according to township fire officials.

Firefighters from Edison and other neighboring towns spent nearly six hours extinguishing the fire, which started at 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 28. Flames from the fire caused the brick building’s old, chemical-soaked wooden floors to give off a thick black smoke visible for miles.

“There are no fire hydrants in that part of Raritan Center,” Fire Capt. Andy Toth said. “So, we had to transport foam suppressant and water tankers to the scene to extinguish the flames.”

Toth said the Middlesex County fire marshal coordinated the operation. Firefighters cleared the scene at 9:30 p.m.
