JACKSON – The Jackson Police Department, with the cooperation of the Jackson School District Board of Education, conducted active shooter/active killer training at the Christa McAuliffe Middle School on Aug. 29.
The term “active killer” is used because a deadly situation may not always include the use of a gun, according to the police department. Officers must be prepared to respond to the use of different types of weapons, police said.
The training session was overseen by the training cadres of the Jackson, Lakewood and Manchester police departments. Students participated in various scenarios the police officers and members of Jackson’s school security staff faced during the exercises.
The participants reviewed prior incidents and received instruction on how to respond, emergency medical procedures and combat tourniquet application. The officers studied tactical considerations and participated in a scenario which simulated a response to an in-progress incident.
Capt. Steven Laskiewicz posted a message on the Jackson Police Department’s social media sites and said, “We would like to thank the superintendent of schools and the Board of Education for their cooperation in this very important training, and also the training staffs from all the agencies who were involved in planning and conducting the training for the officers. Thanks also go out to those students who volunteered their time to help as the Jackson Police Department and other area officers continue training for emergency preparedness.”
