MONROE — A raccoon found in the vicinity of Lori and Michelle streets recently has tested positive for rabies, the second in the township this year, according to the Middlesex County Office of Health Services.
The Middlesex County Office of Health Services reported the raccoon with the positive rabies test in a release on Sept. 6. The Monroe Township Police Township released a rabies advisory through Nixle the same day.
The county health services department said they continue to monitor rabies cases within the municipality. Residents should report wild animals showing signs of unusual behavior to the police department.
Additionally, it is recommended that residents should avoid contact with wild animals and immediately report any bites from wild or domestic animals to the local health department and consult a physician as soon as possible. Also it is recommended to make sure family pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations.
Rabies is caused by a virus which can infect all warm-blooded mammals, including man. The rabies report is the ninth rabid animal reported in Middlesex County.
