Sayreville board planning for parking lot expansion at Samsel school

SAYREVILLE – The Sayreville School District Board of Education has approved a professional services agreement with CME Associates, which will report on a proposed parking lot expansion at the Samsel Upper Elementary School (SUES).

According to a resolution, the board will pay the firm an amount not to exceed $25,000.

Superintendent of Schools Richard Labbe said CME Associates with provide the district with an extensive report on the proposed parking lot expansion at SUES.

“When we constructed that building, I don’t believe we thought hard enough about the amount of buses that would need to transport kids in and out of that school,” Labbe said. “In fact, every child there is actually bused unless their parent comes to pick them up. Currently, we line the buses all along the driveway, which makes it somewhat of a hazardous dismissal and arrival process.

“By going ahead and taking the playground area and transforming it into a parking lot/playground area during lunch and recess, we will be able to park those buses there in the morning so we can safely escort our children into the school, as well in the afternoon where we can safely take them out to the buses and the buses can leave the school in an orderly fashion,” he said.

Funding for the work to be performed by CME Associates was provided through an additional $2 million in state aid Sayreville received for the 2018-19 school year. A total of $1 million from the additional state aid will be allocated toward the construction of the new bus parking lot and recess area and the replacement of the track at SUES.

In other business, the board approved $229,425 contract with Rutgers BioMedical Health Services-University Behavioral Healthcare to provide therapeutic services to students and families in the Sayreville Middle School and SUES as referred by school district personnel through June 30, 2019.

Additionally, the board approved the purchase of a 2020 24-passenger school bus with options from H.A. DeHart Son for $62,049.
