SOUTH RIVER–The Borough Council approved a resolution authorizing an emergency contract with Waterworks Supply Company Inc. to replace fire hydrants.

During routine inspections done by the Department of Public Works, it was determined that seven fire hydrants were inoperable and required immediate attention, according to the council agenda from the Sept. 10 meeting.

Chief Financial Officer Joseph Zanga said the purchase cost  $24,446.34 and the estimate to install the hydrants from a contractor is $71,200. Zanga said the costs to replace the hydrants will be charged against the operating budget and a bond ordinance.

The hydrants are in process of being replaced, according to Zanga.
