JAMESBURG – The Borough Council has adopted an ordinance that prohibits businesses from selling medical marijuana and/or so-called recreational marijuana in Jamesburg.
Council members took the action on Sept. 19.
“The mayor and council had been discussing [this ordinance] with the police chief and borough attorney and myself earlier in the year. Our attorney brought the ordinance to the Aug. 15 meeting and it was decided at that time that the mayor and council would introduce the ordinance,” Borough Administrator Scott Frueh said.
The state Legislature is considering legislation that would permit the distribution and consumption of marijuana in New Jersey, according to the council.
The council is “greatly concerned” about the establishment of businesses engaged in the cultivation, manufacture, distribution, dispensing and/or sale of medical and/or recreational marijuana in Jamesburg, due to special concerns for security and location, according to the governing body.
Jamesburg consists of an area of 0.9 square miles and approximately 6,025 residents, with residences, schools, churches, recreational facilities and family oriented businesses throughout the community. Council members said they believe the establishment of any businesses dealing in marijuana would negatively affect the safety and welfare of residents.
