JAMESBURG – The Borough Council has introduced an ordinance that would, if adopted, reduce the speed limit on Hooker Street.

“A resident came to the Aug. 15 meeting and discussed the issue with the mayor and council,” Borough Administrator Scott Frueh said.

The original and current speed limit on Hooker Street is 30 mph. If the ordinance is adopted following a public hearing on Oct. 17, the speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph, according to Frueh.

Council members introduced the ordinance during the Sept. 19 meeting.

“New speed limit signs would be put up after the ordinance has been adopted and advertised,” Frueh said.

He said the Jamesburg Police Department was consulted about the proposed change and had no issue with reducing the speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph.

In other business, the council introduced an ordinance to add a new section, “Parking Prohibited within Certain Distances from Stop Signs,” to the borough code.

“Normally, parking is not allowed within 50 feet of a stop sign, which is a state law, however, the mayor and council can adjust the distance as long as it is not near a school in accordance with [the state law],” Frueh said.

Frueh said the ordinance that was recently introduced would only apply to a stop sign at the corner of Stockton Street and Lincoln Avenue. Signs will not be needed because the curbs in the affected area have already been painted, he said.

Frueh said residents will be informed of the change if the ordinance is adopted by the council.
