South Amboy school board appoints new member

SOUTH AMBOY – The South Amboy Public Schools Board of Education has appointed Joan Conway to fill an open seat on the board from now through 2019.

Conway was one of four candidates interviewed by board members on Sept. 17. She was sworn in as a member during the board’s Sept. 24 meeting.

Conway is a 10-year resident of the city who holds a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts, a Master of Arts in Fine Arts and a Master of Arts in Administration and Supervision. She worked as a teacher in the Piscataway Public School District and later as the director of the Visual Practical and Performing Arts in the school district.

“It is an honor to become a member of the South Amboy Board of Education at this time of positive transformations that are occurring,” Conway said. “It is my hope that my past expertise in K-12 teaching, supervising and administrating, as well as teaching in a post-secondary setting will bring the knowledge and skills to contribute to the upward movement for our students’ success.

“Since previously my leadership experience brought about innovative programming through a zero-based budgeting system, I know the power of planning. As a district director, I focused on program development within the district schools as well as the community and I see opportunities in these areas as well.

“I am an advocate of integrating the various components in education to connect curricular areas. I hope to contribute my methodologies, creativity and passion for helping our children succeed in their present and future world,” Conway said.

Conway fills the seat left open by the resignation of Tyler Simko in August. The seat now held by Conway will be on the ballot in the November 2019 general election. Simko was the board president. A new president had not been named as of press time.
