MATAWAN – The Matawan Borough Council has authorized several changes in a contract relating to the Transit Village Improvement Project.

Mayor Joseph Altomonte said Seacoast Construction is completing the improvements for the project. He said the work includes improvements to the sidewalks and street crossings in the area of NJ Transit’s Aberdeen-Matawan train station.

Altomonte said Matawan received a $300,000 matching grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation (DOT) for the project.

On May 1, the council adopted a $250,000 bond ordinance which will pay for the match for the DOT grant, according to Borough Administrator Louis Ferrara.

Representatives of T&M Associates informed council members various items have been reduced to reflect current as-built quantities in the Transit Village Improvement Project, for a reduction of $32,699. The changes were approved on Oct. 16.

Representatives of T&M Associates informed council members various extra items are increased to reflect current as-built quantities in the project, for an increase of $12,925.

As part of change order No. 2, the total cost of the improvement increases is $19,774, which include removing and replacing an inlet frame, lower inlet casting, inlet repair, milling 6-inch depth at the parking lot entrances, and extra per county request to face form curb on Main Street, according to the council.

The original contract bid price was $449,266 and the net change amount for the contract is $30,077. The revised contract price is $479,343, according to the council.

Ferrara said reductions and increases will offset each other. When something originally is thought to be more expensive but turns out to be cheaper, the reduced costs of those items/improvements go toward the items that are more expensive than anticipated.

In other business, Ferrara recommended that A. Mitlo Roofing, Carteret, be awarded a contract to complete repairs on the roof of the Matawan Police Department building in an amount not to exceed $16,985. The council awarded the contract to the firm.

“The roof leaks and in order for us to put solar energy panels on the roof, we have to fix it,” Altomonte said.
