NORTH BRUNSWICK – The North Brunswick School District has been named one of The Best Communities for Music Education for 2018 by the NAMM Foundation (National Association of Music Merchants).

“The music program is a special program. No one sits on the bench. Everyone’s a starter,” James Egan, the supervisor for music for grades K-12, said during the Oct. 17 North Brunswick Board of Education meeting.

North Brunswick is one of 500 districts recognized, out of a total 20,000 in the country. The district received the award for the third consecutive year, and has received two banners to hang around the district.

Egan credited the teachers involved with the music students for their success.

“It takes a whole team. You can’t bury yourself in your classroom and be a superstar,” he said.

Egan noted that the student musicians take part in community-wide ceremonies, such as Veterans Day, the Sept. 11 ceremony and the Martin Luther King Jr. remembrance.

He also cited a summer music camp, which allows students to practice with instruments beginning in June, prior to the start of the new school year. He said the children receive 24 hours of free lessons before September.

“This is a great place to work. There is a lot of opportunity to be great,” he said.
