JACKSON — Cornerstone Presbyterian Church is now worshiping in its new church home in the historic building at 569 Harmony Road, Jackson. Services are held every Sunday at 10 a.m. The service is a blend of contemporary and traditional and people from all backgrounds are welcome, according to a press release.
There will be an open house at the church on Nov. 3 from noon to 3 p.m. Members of
the community are invited to stop by and learn more about Cornerstone and the newly renovated church building. Tours and information will be available, and there will be food and activities for children and adults.
The church on Harmony Road was originally a log cabin built in the early 1840s, and the congregation was made up of Methodists and Presbyterians. It was called the Harmony Church based on the combination of Protestant faiths, and this became the name of the community and the name of the road on which it stands, according to the press release.
After the initial building burned down, it was replaced in 1865 at its current location. A cemetery behind the church was established by the original members and holds the
gravesites of many families that inhabited the area. Some of the prominent family names are Clayton, Burke, Thompson, Matthews, Pearce, Cook, Applegate, Hankins, Holman, Boswell, Bennett and Voorhees.
After worshiping in five different schools in the Jackson School District for more than 17 years, Cornerstone entered into a lease agreement with the township in 2014 to use the historic church on Harmony Road. Renovations have been ongoing since that time. Among other improvements, the original outhouse was removed and an addition with an inside bathroom and nursery area was added to the front of the building.
