EAST BRUNSWICK–The East Brunswick Police Department helped raise more than $10,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) One Walk.
Forming #TeamConnor to show their support for Sayreville resident Connor Leonard, 11, who has Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes (T1D), the police department joined forces with PBA Locals 145 and 145A – and the community at large – to raise awareness of and donate funds to juvenile diabetes research.
Connor was diagnosed with T1D at age two. Though he checks his blood sugar levels on a daily basis and gives himself four insulin shots a day, he still participates in activities such as baseball, soccer, tennis, street hockey, piano and his favorite hobby, video games, according to a prepared statement from the police department.
The JDRF One Walk 5K that took place on Oct. 21 at Rutgers University’s Cook Campus in New Brunswick.
Along with his family and friends, Connor has been participating in the JDRF One Walk at Rutgers since his diagnosis, according to the police department.
Public Information Officer Lt. Sean Goggins, who is Connor’s uncle, said, “I was the only EBPD member to walk, but the unions have been donating to the cause for years. My family has been doing the walk since Connor was diagnosed at age two. I am grateful to work for a department that supports causes like this, especially since it is my family.”
