Cranbury committee race a “nail-bitter.”

Republican Wayne Wittman leads Democratic Township Committeeman Michael J. Ferrante by one vote in a contest for Cranbury Township Committee that is still too close to call.

Wittman is ahead 1,025 votes to 1,024, according to the latest updated totals at the Middlesex County Clerk’s Office.

“We believe that the numbers changed because of the Wednesday absentees that were received,” said Ferrante on Nov.8, in calling it a “real nail-bitter.”

He said he expects the total to change slightly from any more mail-in votes that county election officials received on Nov.8, followed by the counting of 86 provisional ballots. The Middlesex County Board of Elections has said provisional ballots would be counted next week.

“It’s still not over yet,” said Wittman on Nov.8.

In a contest for two seats, Democratic Township Committeeman Jay Taylor is the overall top vote-getter so far at 1,067 votes, but one percentage point separates him from the other two candidates.

“It’s all good,” said Ferrante, who is planning to spend his Saturday watching his alma mater, Michigan, play Rutgers in college football. “I think we’re lucky we have three good people for the spots. So it is what it is.”

For Wittman, he has seen this before. He recalled winning a primary by one vote and a general election by 12 votes.

“So I’m used to close races,” he said.
