CBA boys’ soccer wins state title game in overtime

The Christian Brothers Academy boys’ soccer team upset the Delbarton School, 2-1, on Nov. 11 in the NJSIAA Non-Public A championship game.

Luke Pascarella scored a goal in the second overtime to lift CBA to the stunning victory at Kean University in Union.

Delbarton was undefeated at 21-0-1 going into the title game, while the Morris Township school was ranked No. 1 in various state polls.

Delbarton’s last loss came in 2016. That undefeated streak included a victory over CBA in the 2017 Non-Public A state final.

On Nov. 11, the Colts looked well on their way to another defeat to Delbarton, when CBA faced a 1-0 deficit at halftime.

But Jack Hempstead scored in the second half for CBA to force overtime.

The victory was sweet redemption for CBA, which lost to Ocean Township High School in overtime in the Shore Conference Tournament championship game on Oct. 24.

With the victory over Delbarton, CBA earned the seventh state title in program history. The Colts finished the 2018 season at 19-4.
