OLD BRIDGE — Voters who came out to polls last week resoundingly did not want to reinstate the Open Space Trust Fund in Old Bridge.
Some 9,583 voters selected “no” to the ballot question to grant the governing body the right to impose an annual tax levy of up to 3 cents per $100 of assessed valuation for open space purposes, and 4,176 voters selected “yes” during the election on Nov. 6, according to information provided by Middlesex County as of Nov. 11.
Township officials were hoping to revitalize Old Bridge’s Open Space Trust Fund in an effort to continue to preserve open space in the township.
Funds raised through the levy would have been used for the acquisition of land for conservation, public recreation and farmland preservation purposes, and for the payment of debt service or indebtedness.
