EAST BRUNSWICK–A 26-year-old man from Varnville, South Carolina, was charged with allegedly possessing a handgun and marijuana while in East Brunswick.
Patrolman Nick Mauro stopped a motor vehicle around 10:50 p.m. on Nov. 11 in the Colonial Diner’s parking lot on Route 18, for allegedly making an illegal U-turn at Route 18 and Arthur Street, according to information provided by the East Brunswick Police Department.
While speaking to the driver, Mauro allegedly detected an odor of marijuana emanating from inside the vehicle, and had the man exit the vehicle. While outside the vehicle, Mauro allegedly observed a handgun in the waistband of one of the men, and was able to secure the weapon from the man without incident, according to police.
Further investigation revealed the man was reportedly in possession of a loaded .32 caliber Smith and Wesson revolver. The driver was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of marijuana under 50 grams, according to police. He was remanded to the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center.
A passenger in the vehicle, a 21-year-old man from Islandton, South Carolina, was also charged with possession of marijuana under 50 grams and released on his own recognizance pending a court date, according to police.
